The amp had likely been kept back-stage on previous Radiohead tours as a backup for his Eighty-Five, and Jonny probably chose to use it as his Junun guitar amp rather than bring additional gear. Jonny used the Studio 85 as his guitar amp for 2017 Jununlive performances when opening for Radiohead. I suspect he purchased one due to the scarcity of all of the Eighty-Five models, buying whichever he could find, especially since, according to Plank, “the 85 and Studio 85 are the same.” He likely purchased it as a spare for Jonny’s main Eighty-Five, and it is probably the first time that Jonny has had the Studio version. Plank purchased a Fender Studio 85 on ebay in mid-March, 2008. Jonny’s “flat” EQ settings are visible in this photo taken before Radiohead’s show at Rock Werchter on J( photo by fenderbenderbe, the builder of Audio Kitchen amps). The photo was originally posted by Plank on May 19, 2006, during Radiohead’s tour that year ( stringsreunited).Ī photo of the Eighty-Five from Radiohead’s 2012 tour. One can see the knobs of the unused “OVER DRIVE” channel are all set to zero. He did, however, obtain a Fender Studio 85 in mid-March, 2008 as a spare for the regular Eighty-Five.Ī photo of Jonny’s Telecaster Plus, his Fender Eighty-Five, and the bottom half of his Vox AC30. Some sources claim Jonny used a Fender Deluxe 85, but we have yet to find any real evidence. Other mics may be used in studio, but it’s worth noting that Nigel is a fan of SM57s for guitar amps ( The Mix. By the 2000s, Jonny had switched to a Audix OM3 for live performances ( MIX Online). The Fender Eighty-Five was’d with a Shure SM57 at 90s live peformances.

By 2000s, Jonny had started setting the amp with a flat EQ (treble 11, mids 11, bass 11) and a similar volume setting. In the 90s, Jonny generally set the Fender Eighty-Five with a slight mid-boost (treble 11, mids 1, bass 11), and with the the volume relatively low, around 9 or 10. In July, 2006, Plank mentioned that Jonny’s current Eighty-Five is from 1988.

Jonny bought a replacement the same year which he likely uses to this day, assuming that is hasn’t broken and been replaced by another identical amp. Jonny’s original Eighty-Five was most likely stolen along with the rest of the band’s gear in Denver on October 3, 1995. Since he started using a separate tube amp for his clean and low-gain tones in 1993, Jonny switches between the Eighty-Five and his “clean” amp as needed using a BOSS LS-2 line selector, with the Shredmaster connected between the LS-2 and the Eighty-Five so it’s only used with that amp. The exceptions are a few one-off Radiohead gigs where Jonny down-sized to just an AC30, such as the 2010 Haiti benefit show at which Jonny used the Shredmaster with his AC30. Jonny’s Marshall Shredmaster is almost exclusively used with this amp. He also don’t use the amp’s spring reverb – another reason his 90s lead tone is so raw and punchy. This seems to be why Jonny’s 90s high-gain sound is so distinctively brutal and cutting – it let the sound of the Shredmaster come through without much coloration. The fact that the solid-state Eighty-Five is set totally clean means that there’s no tube sag or compression, even if Jonny uses a high-volume, high-gain distortion pedal like the Shredmaster. Although the Eighty-Five has an “OVER DRIVE” channel, Jonny doesn’t use it, and instead sets the amp totally clean. On Pablo Honey, Jonny used it for clean tones on its own, and for heavy distortion in conjunction with his Marshall Shredmaster pedal.

According to Ed, Jonny bought the amp along with his first Telecaster Plus at Denmark street in London when the band got their signing advance from EMI in 1992. The first amp that Jonny used with Radiohead was his solid-state Fender Eighty-Five. Solid State and Digital Fender Eighty-Five His amp stack, consisting of two Vox AC30’s (one mostly obscured by the other amps), a Fender Eighty-Five, and an Ashdown USA 115 Cabinet, can be seen just left of center, fronted by his Telecaster Plus.
